About St Matthew UCC
About St Matthew UCC
St. Matthew was founded in 1852. We are a diverse community of believers brought together by the transforming grace of Jesus Christ. Our Pastor is Rev. Eugene Bartell.
Our Goals
1.
At St. Matthew UCC, our goal is to glorify Christ by building strong, united families equipped for His service. We encourage our families to learn, worship, fellowship and serve together.
2.
No matter how or where we serve Jesus Christ, the people of our congregaton are focused on joyfully doing God’s work. We live out our call to mission and ministry by engaging in ministry with the poor, combating diseases of poverty by improving health globally, creating new places for new people and renewing existing congregations, and developing principled Christian leaders.
The members and friends of St. Matthew UCC welcome all persons, regardless of ethnic heritage, religious backgrounds, etc.
● We believe that each person is unique and valuable.
● We believe that each person is on a spiritual journey, and that each of us is at a different stage of that journey.
● We believe that small changes can make a big difference, as we lend our service to our community, and minister to those in need.
● We believe in supporting families as they grow within the warm environment of the church.
● We believe that a church that brings God's Word to people in every situation, from all walks of life, helps them to grow in love and service to Our Creator and Lord.
● We believe in the power of peace, and work for non-violent solutions to local, national, and international problems.

Bible Study
Our Bible Study meets on Tuesday mornings at 10:30AM. Presently we are studying the book, "Putting Away Childish Things", by Marcus Borg. Putting Away Childish Things is an engaging way for readers to learn about the important issues dividing Christians today like; What does the Bible teach? Who is Jesus? What is the nature of Faith today? Pastor Bartell leads the group in this deeper look into the these insightful teachings. Please join us!
Community Outreach
We may be a small church community, but we strive hard to help our community in many ways, ways that always welcome extra hands! We do "Street Feedings" on a regular basis, creating an assemly line and making bag lunches. We then load up our cars and travel downtown in Baltimore and distribute. It is amazing to participate! We collect warm coats, hats and other warm clothing and also distribute in the city. We collect dry non-parishable food for the Northeast Pantry. We give $$ and household items to Earl's Place, to help men transition to the real world from addiction. We do whatever we can to help those less fortunate.
Child Sponsorship
We collect change and dollars each week as our on-going mission to help children. We sponsor three children; Karthick from India, Christopher from Africia, and Dominque from Jamaica. All of the children are sponsored through Global Ministries of the United Church of Christ. We also contribute each month, additional funds to Hearts to Haiti, in our continual effort to help the many improvished children there. In turn, we receive many thank you notes and pictures, plus updates as the children grow and make lives for themselves. It is very rewarding as we literally change lives with our change!
